Markleeville - General Info

Markleeville is a historic mountain town tucked in a small valley on the East Fork of the Carson River. Discovered by John C. Fremont and Kit Carson in 1864, Markleeville is still a small quaint town with a backdrop of 12,000 foot peaks of the Sierra Nevada.

Tourism is Markleeville's main industry drawing nature lovers and outdoorsmen to enjoy the natural untouched beauty, clean air and endless recreational activities. Fishing, biking, camping, backpacking, canoeing hunting, hiking, wildlife viewing, relaxing, kayaking, river rafting, down hill skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing and cross country skiing are some of the many things to do. Grover's Hot Springs State Park's natural hot mineral springs are open to the public for a small fee. Kirkwood ski area and other back country skiing and snowmobiling locations are closeby. Markleeville is rich in history, the Alpine County Museum is full of historical relics dating back to the silver mining boom of the 1860's.

Alpine County is California's least populated county. With 97% of the land in Alpine County being public, Markleeville is hoped to remain the same. The Friends of Hope Valley is a non profit group working to preserve and protect Hope Valley's wild and pristine beauty.
